Return to Hartsfield Incinerator

The Hartsfield Incinerator site offers an opportunity to host a variety of social activities for the region as well the adjacent neighborhoods. The site has a large open, relatively flat, currently hardsurfaced area, which directly lends itself to the development of a permanent plaza for social celebrations and gatherings of all types. Arts festivals, craft fairs, ethnic celebrations, and musical events could be held at the Hartsfield Incinerator site and a plaza would provide an adequate setting to host any and all of these activities. Festivals and fairs could help provide a citywide identity for the site and a source of revenue for the Chattahoochee Riverway projects.

DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS

The final design incorporates a variety of plaza elements. A long linear space for portable festival display booths and a central plaza area with a focal point designed to hold a water feature. The area incorporates a number of lawn areas and raised planters for trees and seating. Access is provided by a grand staircase or an elevator from the building or a long handicap accessible ramp, which circles the area.
